Did you know that three of the physicians who served the community in the early years of Elizabeth General Hospital & Dispensary were also elected Mayors of Elizabeth, NJ? Dedicated to their profession and dedicated to serving the people of Elizabeth, we salute the character of these physicians and how their efforts improved the quality of life for Elizabeth's residents.
James S. Green, MD
The first, James S. Green, MD, regarded as one of the founders of the first hospital in Elizabeth, served a one-year term while he was also working to establish the first hospital. His term was from January 1, 1878 to January 1, 1879. The hospital was incorporated later in 1879.
William A.M. Mack, MD
The second, William A.M. Mack, MD, was elected in 1898 and actually died while serving his term of office (during his second term) on January 14, 1901. There is a statue erected in his honor on Elizabeth Avenue.
Victor Mravlag, MD
The third, Victor Mravlag, MD, served a total of six terms as Mayor. His first term was from 1909-1911. He was re-elected in 1913 and served five consecutive two-year terms from 1913-1923.
